چکیده

[1] We present a model for the study of the effect of rheological hysteresis on compaction in sedimentary basins, when surface loading and unloading occurs. When compaction is slow (sedimentation rate is large and/or permeability is small), the hysteresis has little effect on the basal compaction layer, but in the more realistic case where compaction is fast (i.e., sedimentation is slow and/or permeability is large), surface unloading leads to downward propagation of a decompaction front, across which the vertical porosity gradient jumps, while subsequent surface reloading leads to downward propagation of a discontinuity in porosity, despite the fact that the porosity is governed by a diffusive equation of Richards type.

Abnormal fluid pressures caused by deposition and erosion of sedimentary basins

Gravitational loading or unloading due to deposition or erosion in sedimentary basins is one of the most common mechanisms responsible for abnormal fluid pressures in geologic formations. This paper examines the integrated response of fluid pressures to both deposition and erosion using vertical one-dimensional numerical models. The modeling results show that vertical loading and unloading of s...

Stress-strain Hysteresis of a Carbon Nanotube Network as Polymer Nanocomposite Filler under Cyclic Deformation

A network of entangled multiwall carbon nanotubes is an assembly of non-bonded and randomly oriented units whose mechanical behavior is affected by their buckling, compression and slippage at contact points. Slippage and irreversible nanotube rearrangements are evidenced by the hysteresis in the stress-strain curves during loading and unloading cycles. To model the mechanical behavior, a nonlin...

Finite Strain Behavior of Polyurea for a Wide Range of Strain Rates

Polyurea is a special type of elastomer that features fast setting time as well as good chemical and fire resistance. It has also good mechanical properties such as its high toughness-to-density ratio and high strain rate-sensitivity, so its application is recently extended to structural purpose to form sandwich-type or multi-layered plates. Those structures can be used for retrofitting of mili...

Performance Prediction of a Flexible Manufacturing System

The present investigation presents a stochastic model for a flexible manufacturing system consisting of flexible machine, loading/unloading robot and an automated pallethandling device. We consider unreliable flexible manufacturing cell (FMC) wherein machine and robot operate under individual as well as common cause random failures. The pallethandling system is completely reliable. The pallet o...
